Selena Gonzalez

Selena Duarte is a bilingual community leader and program strategist with over 10 years of experience advancing equity, empowerment, and sustainability through community-based initiatives, partnerships, and public health programs. Her career reflects a deep commitment to building systems of care that center dignity, collaboration, and long-term community well-being.


Since August 2023, Selena has served as the Grants and Partnerships Coordinator and a member of the Leadership Team at Homies Empowerment in Oakland, California. In this role, she helps guide the organization’s strategic direction by managing partnerships, leading grant development and reporting, and supporting the implementation of innovative program models. Selena mentors staff, coordinates team schedules, and ensures accountability by upholding organizational policies and procedures. Her leadership supports Homies Empowerment’s mission to foster self-determination and holistic support for youth, families, and community members in Deep East Oakland.


From 2021 to 2023, Selena worked with the Alameda County Public Health Department, coordinating vital health and social services for diverse individuals and families. She collaborated with healthcare providers, community agencies, and stakeholders to advocate for equitable access to care. Her caseload included clients with disabilities and those in need of assistive technology, vocational rehabilitation, or independent living supports ensuring that each person’s needs were met with empathy and precision.


Before that, Selena served with the CDC Foundation from 2020 to 2021, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. She conducted needs assessments, developed individualized support plans, and connected vulnerable community members to essential resources, including housing, financial aid, and medical care. Her ability to coordinate complex systems of support played a critical role in improving outcomes for hundreds of families during a time of crisis.


Selena’s journey with Homies Empowerment began earlier in 2020 when she served as Executive Coordinator, playing a key role in developing and managing the FREEdom Store a community-driven hub. She led volunteer coordination, managed logistics, and cultivated partnerships with local organizations to expand the store’s reach and sustainability.


Earlier in her career, Selena served as a Housing Specialist in San Francisco and as a Restorative Justice Specialist and Executive Assistant at her local High School, where she promoted restorative practices, student wellness, and organizational efficiency.


Selena holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Politics with a Minor in Education from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Selena is deeply committed to advancing justice, equity, and empowerment through collaboration and visionary community leadership.
